King and Queen CONSORT: Royal couple retreat ahead of coronation

King Charles and Queen Camilla’s grand coronation day is fast approaching, set to take place at Westminster Abbey on May 6th. With preparations now fully underway, the royal couple has taken a break from the planning and retreated to one of their favorite residences, Balmoral in Scotland.

During their time at Balmoral, Charles and Camilla attended church at Crathie Kirk on Sunday. The church has been the place of worship for the British royal family whenever they are in residence at nearby Balmoral Castle. In fact, a private service for family was held there following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 10th, ahead of her state funeral nine days later at Westminster Abbey.

While the Queen was also in residence at Balmoral when she passed away at the age of 96, Charles will now focus on his historic coronation next month. The coronation will be a family affair, with the King being joined by both of his sons as he is crowned at Westminster Abbey.

Prince Harry is also set to attend the coronation, although without his wife and children. It is unclear whether he will have a role in the ceremony, given his decision to step back as a working royal. His appearance alongside the rest of the royal family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace also seems unlikely, as only working members were allowed on the balcony during the Platinum Jubilee.

In fact, during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the late Queen dictated that only working members of the royal family would appear on the famous balcony, ruling out Harry and Meghan. After the pageant celebrations, the monarch was only joined by Charles and Camilla, William, Kate, George, Charlotte, and Louis for an impromptu balcony appearance.

The Sussexes only made one public appearance during the Platinum Jubilee, attending a Thanksgiving Service at St Paul’s Cathedral. While it remains to be seen how involved Prince Harry will be in the upcoming coronation ceremony, the eyes of the world will undoubtedly be on King Charles and Queen Camilla as they take their place on the throne.
