King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands concluded their state visit to Slovakia on a high note with a visit to the picturesque Tatra Mountains region on March 4, 2023. Their first stop was in the town of Poprad, where the King and Queen visited a center for Ukrainian refugees. Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Slovakia’s border has become a gateway for many who are seeking safety and refuge. Over one million Ukrainians have crossed the border since the war started, and the Dutch royals were keen to see first-hand the efforts being made to support them.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima’s next stop was the historical Spisska Sobota district of Poprad. The district is a testament to the cultural heritage of Slovakia and the Carpathian Germans, a recognized minority in the country. The royal couple was impressed by the well-preserved buildings and the rich history behind them.
The state visit culminated in a visit to Tatra National Park, where King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima got to witness the natural beauty of Slovakia’s mountainous landscape. The park boasts stunning views of the Tatras, the highest mountain range in the Carpathians. The royal couple, along with President Caputova, enjoyed a hike in the park, taking in the fresh air and the beautiful surroundings.
